Sam and MaryBased out of the cookie-cutter suburbia of Ottawa, Canada, this fresh, young couple is anything but suburban. It is apparent that their goal in life is to squeeze every drop of pleasure out of every moment. To soak it all in, as they say. That love of life is the source of inspiration for their images which blur the lines of traditional photographic genres and ends up being a tangy mix of colors, moods and moments - each image packed with emotion, each with a story to tell. Here’s a bit about their story. [Interviewer]: How did you get started in photography? [Sam]: Well, originally I wanted to be a musician [laughs] yeah like a rock star. I had dreams of setting up my own recording studio, writing, recording and producing albums. Problem was it wasn’t well suited for our family life. And on top of that, I couldn’t afford to buy the gear - so I took up photography and fell in love with it. Like music, its emotional and creative and the funny thing is, at the time, I figured that photography was cheaper than recording. [laughs] man, was I wrong! [Interviewer]: Who knows, maybe we’ll still see an album from you in the future. How about you, Mary? [Mary]: The day I left for college I asked for my first film camera. With that packed in my suitcase, I was ready to see the world. That was how I got the shutterbug and my passion for capturing life around me grew from there. I’d have to say, it was truly not until I quit my day job (when I became a mother) and was able to stay home that I was free to pursue this passion of mine further. Now I just love what I do and understand why other photographers love their work too! [Interviewer]: So this leads me to my next question. What do you guys like best about photography? [Mary]: For me, it’s a lot of things. It’s capturing real life. As a photographer I get to capture real people. I get the pleasure of meeting them, their families, and sharing in their lives. I love telling their stories through photography and that connection between artist and the subject is important to me. I love photography because powerful images can uplift us, make us smile, or cry, and helps us to discover who we are. There’s nothing I love more about photography than being able to feel the satisfaction of creating that image that evokes an emotion. [Sam]: I totally agree. Ultimately, I think its the satisfaction of creating something new. I love that we’re constantly growing as artists. I love the challenge of finding exciting ways to create our art and it’s awesome that our clients trust us for our style and creativity. [Interviewer]: What do you do in your free time? [Sam]:I like to plug in my guitar, crank the volume to 11 and ROCK OUT! [laughs] [Mary]: Maybe we’ll build you your own sound proof studio afterall! [laughs] [Sam]: Yeah, well, there’s not too much free time around this place! When I do have some time, I also love riding and working on my [motor]bike. You’ll find during the summer, I’m constantly taking off for some obscure errand just to squeeze in a ride. [Mary]: Yeah, like the time I asked you to whip out for some cough drops and bandaids and you came home an hour later? [laughs] [Interviewer]: Sounds like fun. Next time you go for cough drops, give me a call! [Mary]: For me, besides photography, I love being a mother and spending time with our two girls. They are absolutely among the best people I know and sam and I are so blessed to have them in our lives. Together, we love, live and learn. Okay, we laugh a lot too! We are enjoying following our passions and many interests. In my busy day, I like to curl up in a comfy seat (minus the toys and our cat) and find time to sip through a whole cup of tea without having to warm it up twice! |
